The Tongariro River is internationally recognised as one of the best trout fly fishing rivers in New Zealand. It is famous for its strong runs of wild rainbow and brown trout, particularly during the winter spawning season when trout migrate upstream from Lake Taupō. The river’s clear water, accessible pools, and beautiful surroundings attract anglers from around the world.

The Tongariro River offers excellent fly fishing year-round, but many anglers consider the winter months (June to September) the most famous season. Yes. A Taupō fishing licence is required to fish the Tongariro River and other rivers in the Taupō region. Licences are managed by Fish & Game New Zealand and can easily be purchased online or from local retailers in Tūrangi.

Guests staying at The Quarters in Tūrangi have access to a number of facilities designed to make it easy to relax and unwind after a day of fly fishing on the famous Tongariro River.

Our property includes free guest laundry facilities, ideal for washing fishing clothing and gear after a day on the water, along with space to store equipment between fishing sessions.

Guests are also welcome to enjoy our covered outdoor courtyard area, which is set up for relaxing and sharing stories from the river. The space includes two Weber BBQ grills and outdoor heaters, providing a great spot to cook dinner and unwind after a day on the water.

For fly fishing groups staying in The Lodge or House, there is also access to an outdoor gas fireplace in the covered courtyard area, creating a warm and comfortable place for anglers to gather in the evenings — especially during the cooler months of the Tongariro River trout fishing season.
